Soundtoys Devil-Loc Deluxe

To take things beyond the hardware that inspired it and provide even more creative flexibility, Soundtoys has created a deluxe version of the Devil-Loc plugin, Devil-Loc Deluxe. The Deluxe version adds a "Darkness" control for tone, interchangeable slow or fast release times, and a mix knob, so you can bring some dry signal back into the front panel.

The addition of these controls greatly expands the sonic palette. It’s perfect for creating dark, thunderous drums, lo-fi driven loops, and more, and the mix control eliminates tedious routing, allowing you to automate the mix to keep the devil from taking over the soul of your tracks.

A Little History...

The original Level-Loc by Shure from the 1960s was a wall-mounted limiter designed to be used in PA systems. Its extreme compression and rough sound eventually became a secret weapon for some well-known, highly creative engineers and producers.

It's an extreme effect, capable of creating huge sounds with drums and room microphones, and in small amounts, it can add sizzle to elements like vocals or acoustic guitars.

The controls were very simple, with only a switch for three “distance” settings based on how far you were from the mic. The M62V added a bit more control by adding an input level knob.

It became famous largely due to Soundtoys user Tchad Blake and his desire to push, abuse, and do deliciously wicked things with his tracks. He discovered that the Level-Loc was gritty, dirty, and unusual—the kind of compression that made drums sound massive and nasty, which is a good thing.

Devil-Loc Deluxe also includes the original Devil-Loc. It may be small with only two knobs, but it’s really big on sound. If you already have it, check your account for updates to the Deluxe version.
